The Beachcomber IOP

The Beachcomber IOP
The Beachcomber Outpatient Services is designed for those who cannot go to inpatient or residential treatment AND for those seeking aftercare for an inpatient program. The Beachcomber Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is designed to expand on the thoughts and ideas which allowed our inpatient or residential program, The Beachcomber Family Center for Addiction Recovery, to build over 37 years of successfully treating those afflicted with alcoholism and drug addiction. This includes an emphasis on structure, discipline, hope, self-esteem, fun, and especially, the tools to stay sober after the IOP experience is completed.

“Once Upon A Time . . .”

“Once Upon A Time  .  .  .”

But what is time?  Clearly the phrase, “Once upon a time” used to begin children’s storybook tales is intended to be timeless, not designating any particular time.  But these mirthful “never-never lands” of childhood, eventually give way to the adult world of clocks and watches that measure time.  But once again, what is time? While clocks and watches measure the time of day or night in our planet’s rotation, calendars track the passage of days, weeks, and months in the earth’s annual revolution around the sun, marking the seasons of  Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall.
As a New Year begins, our 2013 Calendars are already beginning to keep track of future appointments, and we grow a year older, celebrating birthdays and anniversaries.   But what is time? Sometimes we spend time to save money, and at other times spend money to save time, depending how much of each we have, or which is more important.  The ancient Greeks had two words for time: chronos from which we derive the word chronology, an expanse of time; and kairos, the here and now, present moment.  So often, our head and heart are not where our feet are - our conscious mind is so preoccupied with a past resentment or shame, or a possible future fear or threat that we fail to enjoy and savor the here and now in all of its wonder.        As our time on this earth diminishes, let us spend it well, cherishing each unrepeatable moment as an awesome gift.  A new day dawns and a New Year beckons.  Carpe diem!  Savor the moment – each unfolding precious moment!

Ways to Live, and Not Merely Exist

Ways to Live, and Not Merely Exist

1.   Appreciate the great people and things in your life. – Sometimes we don’t notice the things others do for us until they stop doing them.  Don’t be like that.  Be grateful for what you have, who loves you, and who cares for you.  You’ll never know how much they mean to you until the day they’re no longer beside you.  Truly appreciate those around you, and you’ll soon find many others around you.  Truly appreciate life, and you’ll find that you have more of it to live.

YOGA POSE OF THE WEEK

Start in a kneeling position, sitting on the heels with the feet and knees together. This kneeing position alone can be difficult, be patient and the ankles and knees will start to cooperate.
Raise the arms up overhead and bring the palms together, thumbs crossed. Keep the spine straight and the arms straight throughout the pose.
Inhale stretch up, and exhale slowly bend forward in a straight line from the tailbone to the fingertips. Stretch forward all the way until the forehead touches the floor and the sides of the hands reach the floor.
Engage the arms and straighten the elbow so much that the wrists, elbows and triceps lift off the floor, and keep sliding the fingertips forward.
To create a deep spine stretch, simultaneously reach the buttocks back to the heels. Keep using the abdominal muscles and eventually the buttocks will touch the heels throughout the pose.
With the arms stretching forward and the hips reaching back into the heels, bring the chin forward and away from the chest. Relax the shoulders and breath, and enjoy the deep stretch along the back.
Hold for 20 seconds.
Come out of the pose the same way you worked into the pose – slowly, with the hips reaching back to the heels and the spine and arms straight.
To prevent the spine from rounding and buckling as you move in and out of the pose, remember to use the abdominal muscles.
Benefits

  • Helps the body and mind to relax
  • Stretches the spine and gluts
  • Stretches lower lungs
  • Helps with indigestion
  • Mild inversion with the head below the heart, increasing the circulation of blood to the brain
  • Strengthens the abdomen
  • Tones the thighs
  • Stretches the hips
  • Improves the flexibility of the scapula, deltoids, triceps and latissimus dorsi muscles
  • With the forehead on the floor it stimulates the pituitary gland, which helps to regulate the sleep-wake cycle.

From the Director of Therapy.

Nutrition can go a long way toward rebuilding a body that is stronger and healthier

Nutrition can go a long way toward rebuilding a body that is stronger and healthier

Take control of your health, sobriety, and recovery. Sound nutrition serves to reverse the damaging effects of alcohol and drugs. By eating right, you can restore and promote your body’s natural supply of “feel good chemicals” and enhance your mood.
